Teller Talks and other revelations from the Penn & Teller Show

Okay, so I wouldn't necessarily consider Penn & Teller a must see act for honeymooners or people about to tie the knot.

They don't exactly fire up the love hormones ... or come off particuarly warm (although the little guy is very sweet and cute). In fact, they tend to obliterate any warm and fuzzy feelings you might have from the afterglow of your wedding. Even their website says they "are eccentric magicians with a psychotic twist."

But if you are a fan, or just want to see if Teller actually talks when out of character, you should definately check them out at The Rio. They put on a good show for the money. Hubby plunked down $85 per ticket (on a week night) and took me on a date to see them.

But my eyes were on Penn Jillette.

Frankly ... before I saw him live, he scared me a little, especially since he has been doing a cable TV show that begins with the word "Bull" and continues with a word I cannot even repeat in the family blog. The content is worse then the name. Producers round up new age and spirituality experts and Penn & Teller make them look like idiots. On TV, and in his act, Penn debunks new age stuff in the nastiest way.

I wanted to meet him and end my fear... and see if he was really that mean.

He is a big man, and a little scary looking. He is the first to admit it. When Hubby and I walked into the theater Penn was playing the base, along with his pianist, and was under a hat, incognito. Everyone who arrives at the theater is invited to come on stage and sign an envelope and look a a big, wooden magicicans box. They bring you into the act from the moment you arrive. Its kind of intimate.

Part of the comedy-magic act is to explain how the magic works, thereby entertaining while showing that it is all, well, Bull..... It was kind of interesting to hear it dymystified and in some ways debunked by the performer himself. Also interesting was the fact that Teller is small and cute and gentle yet does bits that are macabe.

The sexiest moment -- lets say, only sexy moment -- was Penn on a couch with a lovely lady doing fire-eating and fire blowing tricks using their mouths, a few torches, and a few neat moves. It was well choreographed with great music. Interesting to watch a well-heeled, attractive woman so-- literally-- hot for Penn. They swapped flames, and everything!

My greatest surprise was that Teller talks off stage and even during the show when he is on the aise.

He came to hubby in the audience and motioned to him to select a book as part of one of the bits. Hubby promptly knocked over a Diet Coke. A kneeling Teller said softly, "It's okay... pick a book."

Immediately after the show, I saw Teller schmoozing with fans and taking photos. I thought, wow, I guess they send the little guy out. And then there was Penn, his hair out of the braid and falling wildly to his shoulders... looking like a wild man ... taking photos with fans.

It was a nice gesture. And a great chance for me to be over my fear of him. I slipped an arm around his waist, and took a photo. I think I am over it... and maybe even undertsand his point of view a little better.

One thing is for sure, Penn and Tell give a lot to their audience and they hang around after to give some more.
