Diamonds: The choice is yours
How much is your love worth? Can you put a dollar amount on the value of your relationship and happiness?
Experts say budget two months’ salary for a ring, but that amount is just a starting point for most.
Know what you want and the language of the jeweler before shopping. Often a prospective bride or groom will fall in love with a stone on first sight; just like in real life. Remember to include the cost of the wedding band—a common oversight.
Diamonds are evaluated according to the “4 C’s”: carat, color, clarity, and cut.
Carat refers to the diamond’s weight. Bigger isn't always better!
A diamond’s color is actually based on the absence of color, and rated on a scale that runs from D (virtually colorless) to Z (traces of yellow or brown). The whiter the diamond, the more expensive it will be.
Clarity indicates how many imperfections are in the body of the stone. Almost every diamond has tiny, internal flaws, but not all of them are visible to the naked eye. Those with fewer flaws are more expensive.
The cut of a diamond is important to maximizing all of its best qualities. Find the best possible cut because even if a diamond if flawed and doesn’t enjoy a good deal of clarity, a well-cut stone can disguise such imperfections.
There are typically three different diamond shapes to consider: the traditional round diamond, the most popular shape; oval, an elegant stone that gives the illusion of an elongated finger; and square-shaped stones such as the Asscher with its beveled corners or the cushion, featuring curved sides and rounded corners.
There are many choices for settings.
The most popular is the prong-set ring, which has four to six “claws” holding the diamond. The bezel setting sits the diamond in the midst of a metal rim, while the channel setting allows two stones to sit side-by-side. There is also the bar setting, which a thin bar is shared between two diamonds.
The classic solitaire diamond is still one of the most popular styles, but pavé diamonds—in which diamond accents are set in metal around the main stone—are an increasingly frequent choice.
Sidestones can be virtually any shape or size and add style and sparkle to your ring.
So, happy shopping, and make your love happy during Cupid’s month!
