Lovelock, Nevada capitalizes on Chinese tradition

Lovelock, Nevada lockIn an effort to draw more tourists to its rural town, Lovelock, Nevada opened Lovers Lock Plaza on Valentine’s Day.

There’s an ancient Chinese tradition where couples place a lock on a chain and throw away the key, thus preserving their love forever . . . at least according to the tradition. I wonder what the divorce rate is in China? Surely locking your love can’t be that easy.

If you visit the Great Wall you’ll see miles of chains holding lovers’ locks. And if you saw last season’s Amazing Race on ABC you watched as contestants had to search for one lock among hundreds of locks that would be unlocked with their key.

So, for those of you who want to preserve your love forever, a quick jaunt to Lovelock, a lock and a key, should do the trick.

I made a trip to Carson City Nevada from Peoria, Illinois and my Sister made sure she took me to Love lock, was very disappointed that I could not purchase the double heart as they were not availble that day-- Monday the 4th of September.
I would have came earlier if I would have known that the merchants would not be open. This should have been on these web sites.

Now I need to know how much it would cost to add the double heart to the ones I have already purchased. If you could find this out for me I would appreciate it.

To Gwen Womack:

I work with the Nevada Commission on Tourism and have been working with the Lovelock Chamber of Commerce to help them in making Lovers Lock Plaza a success. One of the issues that we have faced is problems in practicality of the vendor that those double heart shaped locks. The only vendor that would manufacture the locks is in China, and reordering has been a very difficult process. A colleague of mine here at the Commission on Tourism has a spare double lock that he said he would be happy to send to you for the inconvenience. If you would prefer, I am sure we could make arrangements to have it engraved and placed on the chain at the plaza. We understand your frustration and hope that we can make amends. Please call me at 775-687-0614 so we can make arrangements to take care of this. Thank you.
