The cost of love

Valentine's Day candyHow much do you think the average guy spends on his gal each year? According to Best Life magazine it’s about $11,800.

In his book, “Emotional Infidelity: How to Affair-Proof Your Marriage,” author and psychotherapist Gary Neuman says “We have surely attributed the idea of giving a gift or spending money on someone as a sign of love …. But keep in mind, when we spend our money on someone there is a subtle commentary there that part of what I work for when I am away from you is to give to you, to enhance your life to some extent.”

I suspect most guys spend more money when they’re courting than when they’re married. And I suspect that Valentine’s Day ranks right up there as one of the most expensive days of the year, probably right next to anniversaries, birthdays and Christmas.

I traditionally give my wife red roses for Valentine’s Day, although I usually purchase them a couple days in advance so as to avoid the rush on the big sweetheart day. This year I found a great bouquet at a reasonable price at Sam’s Club early in the morning on Valentine’s Day.

We celebrated the evening by hiring a babysitter for the two kids and going out to eat with friends at a restaurant we hadn’t tried before, Spago at The Forum Shops at Caesars Palace. The meal was delectable and the service was just what you’d expect, very good. We knew going in we’d be spending a pretty penny for not too much food. When we left we were surprised at how full we were and how delicious everything tasted.

After Spago we did a little shopping at The Forum Shops then headed home for a nice evening together. Valentine’s Day for me is much better now that I’m married. And as for the cost, true love is priceless.
