750 Brides and Grooms Due to Say "I Do" In Pittsburgh
If you think one wedding is frenetic, imagine a mass of men and women saying "I Do" simultaneously!
One would imagine the scene was at least a little chaotic when about 750 brides and grooms renewed their wedding vows in Pittsburgh's Carnegie Hall on Valentine's Day.
Don't mean to be a killjoy, but somehow, renewing your vows alongside 749 other couples just does not seem to be the kind of intimate moment you'd hope for on such a milestone occasion in a couple's life.
And can't you just hear the groans of relatives, who apparently had to buy tickets for the event? They must done so mumbling under their breath: They better have an open bar and be serving awesome food at this cost!
Here's one thing we do know... its good pr.
Pittsburgh is celebrating its 250th year in 2008 and utilizing this big birthday to bring attention to the city. This massive vow renewal was said to be the brainchild of Kitty Julian, marketing director for Carnegie Museums of Art and Natural History and Pittsburgh 250 Committee Member.
It was presided over by Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl, who was angling for a place in the world records.
As Julian explained it: "Pittsburgh is such a family town. We love weddings and celebrating. What better way to celebrate love and Pittsburgh's 250th anniversary than to try for the Guinness Record for the most couples to renew their vows together. It has been such a joy to bring everyone together to pull this off."
After press time we discovered of the 743 who registered, 629 couples showed up. Check out this article in the Pittsburgh Tribune for more information and photos.
