My Enduring Relationship with Superman

CATEGORIZED AS: Memories

By Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway

My “relationship” with Superman began at age seven, when he swooped into my living room in the person of George Reeves. It was reignited at 19, when Christopher Reeve stepped into those bright red boots in Superman, The Movie.

The movie filled me with a pang of longing. I wanted to be part of the energy, excitement and adventure I saw on the screen. By then, I was working at my first newspaper job and on my way to a life of Lois Lane assignments. I could relate to the romance of the newsroom.

The anticipation and affection between Superman and Lois in the movie were another draw. I liked the idea of having an important career and an important superhero kind of guy who could be there at the drop of a hat – or helicopter, as it were. As a romantic fantasy, the Supes had one thing most mythic men can’t beat -- a day job at a major metropolitan newspaper. To an aggressive cub reporter, there was nothing as exciting as a man with a press card.

Perry White Yelling at Superman. This is a great video.

Far from the world of weddings and engagements, Wedlok.com strays into the land of Superman today. Batton Lash unearthed this slice of pop culture.

This awesome reel of clips from the original Superman TV series show Perry White (John Hamilton) giving it to Clark Kent (George Reeves).

Remember how John Hamilton as Perry in "The Adventures of Superman" typically barked "Great Caesar's ghost!" when angry, exasperated or surprised. Here's where it originated.

For those of us who have been in media for a few decades, who hasn't had an editor who strongly disagreed from time to time? Enjoy!

Elvis Gone For 30 Years? He Lives On In Las Vegas!

CATEGORIZED AS: Las Vegas , Memories

By Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway

August 17, 2007 marks the 30 year anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley. Hard to believe that Elvis left the building three decades ago!

Must have been soon after that we saw the advent of the "Elvis Wedding" Las Vegas in now famous for.

Elvis truly lives on here in the form of multiple entertainers who have taken on his look, style, hair, hip swiveling, persona and singing voice. They regularly carry on the tradition of the Elvis nuptials with song and merriment at famous chapels such as The Graceland Chapel, Little White Chapel, and Viva Las Vegas Chapel.

Viva Las Vegas.jpg

Although some of the bigger hotels like to think of themselves as the posher, more sophisticated, non-Elvis part of the Las Vegas wedding industry, Elivis Presley is honored is smaller chapels and many hotels and casinos everyday in nuptials up and down the Strip!

The guys who impersonate Elvis here take it very personally. I am sure they will be thinking of the king tomorrow! And like many of us, remembering where they were when they first heard the news that he was gone.

The Elvis’ of Las Vegas reguarly serenade couples with Viva Las Vegas with such vitality and joy that it feels like the movie is being filmed right there on the spot! Often, they use that song to get everyone at your wedding singing and bopping and rejoicing for your big day! (When hubby and I renewed our vows at the Graceland Chapel, Elvis and the era of Ann-Margret’s sexy legs and seductive smirk came alive!)

Speaking of Viva Las Vegas ... in an attempt to try to "ease the sorrow" of fans, Warner Home Video and Paramount Home Entertainment coordinated an anniversary mega re-release of Elvis classics to coincide with the celebrations and remembrances at the real Graceland, in Memphis, during Elvis Week (which began August 11 and run through the 19th).

They re-packaged 24 the trademark Elvis movies. He starred in 31 of those hip-swiveling, lip curling classics. This includes delux editions of "Jailhouse Rock" (1957) and Viva Las Vegas (1964).

Anyone whose been hitched in an Elvis Las Vegas wedding ceremony may find if hard to believe that film was made over 40 years ago. Many of the brides and grooms who come here weren’t even born yet!

Here’s an interesting tidbit from By Michael H. Kleinschrodt, DVD columnist for The Times-Picayune:

Viva Las Vegas, whose catchy title tune too easily becomes lodged in the brain, is from the middle of Presley's movie career. It is one of his slickest productions and is arguably the only one to give him a co-star -- Ann-Margret -- whose talent approached his own. In his commentary track for this title, Pond says Presley's people were so worried that Ann-Margret might overshadow Presley that all but one of their duets was cut from the film."

“This time, Presley plays a guitar-playing auto racer wooing Ann-Margret's character, a swimming instructor at a Las Vegas hotel. Again, there's no Oscar-worthy acting going on, but the movie beautifully showcases the vitality of its stars and illustrates the sense of pure fun that informed most of Presley's films. “

Elvis has become a staple of Las Vegas and the king of the Las Vegas wedding chapel culture. The neat part about this re-release is the DVD includes a 20-minute documentary about the importance of Las Vegas throughout Presley's career.

Will the Elvis impersonators wear their black jumpsuits tomorrow? Will they morn the memory of the lost king, or head toward Memphis to celebrate his life? If you are thinking of tomorrow as a day to get hitched by the King, I am sure you will find one of his "representatives" here to sing your through your I Dos.

Sirus Radio will carry the Elvis Week activities live on their Elvis Radio channel.

You can still come to Las Vegas and get married by Elvis while listening to his other hometown celebration on the radio! Long live the King!

The cost of love

CATEGORIZED AS: Memories

Valentine's Day candyHow much do you think the average guy spends on his gal each year? According to Best Life magazine it’s about $11,800.

In his book, “Emotional Infidelity: How to Affair-Proof Your Marriage,” author and psychotherapist Gary Neuman says “We have surely attributed the idea of giving a gift or spending money on someone as a sign of love …. But keep in mind, when we spend our money on someone there is a subtle commentary there that part of what I work for when I am away from you is to give to you, to enhance your life to some extent.”

I suspect most guys spend more money when they’re courting than when they’re married. And I suspect that Valentine’s Day ranks right up there as one of the most expensive days of the year, probably right next to anniversaries, birthdays and Christmas.

Lupercalia festival and Caesar and fertility and high school

CATEGORIZED AS: Memories

Caesars PalaceAfter reading Peter's blog on the history of Valentine's Day, I was reminded that the Lupercalia festival is mentioned in William Shakespeare's play, Julius Caesar. For years, I forced my high school students to read, and yes, enjoy, the beauty of the Master's writing.

Lupercalia festival was a pagan holiday when women could shake "the barren curse" and become fertile again. Now all my former students who read the blog and who also read the play have a connection to Valentine's Day and Shakespeare. Now that is cool. (Retired English teachers are so easily amused.)

Of course, the joy of the Lupercalia festival and fertility is over shadowed in the play by the death of Julius Caesar on the Ides of March (March 15).

Charlie Palmer Steak House - Las VegasI did not see Lance Armstrong biking around Vegas, but I did see Tom Selleck on my last visit to my favorite spot.

When out for my libation of choice, a very dry martini, I seek out Sam-a master "mixologist." He can be found at the lounge at the Charlie Palmer Steak House in the Four Season's Hotel on Las Vegas Blvd.

Sam has mixed drinks for me at the Rio's Voo Doo Lounge and at the Paris Hotel and Casino but seems most at home at Charlie Palmer's.

By the way, the food at the steak house was amazing. (The afternoon tea is fun too if you stop off for a few Champaign cocktails and take novelist Mary Schramski with you.)

If I were to have another wedding reception, CPSH and the Four Season's would be number one on the list. Of course, I just love most places Vegas and so does most of Hollywood, it seems.
