Father Cutie's Confession - Celibacy is Hard

CATEGORIZED AS: News , Trendsetters

By Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway

With all the hullabaloo about the very handsome Father Alberto Cutie, the popular Catholic priest who got caught in a passionate embrace with an attractive woman on a beach, I have been pondering these burning questions:

father cutie.jpg

Are good-looking priests less likely to remain celibate? Is it hard for them to do so? Do we sympathize with their plight more, say, than average looking or unattractive clergy people who have taken a vow of celibacy? Are we secretly cheering on the cute ones in collars to surrender to the kind of unbridled romance we loved so much in The Thornbirds?

I mean, have you had a look at this controversial Priest?

Although his name is pronounced Father “koo-tee-ay”, he is indeed Father Cutie! He has the whole package going on. They call him Father Oprah, for dispensing advice on life and relationships and he has:

* Good looks
* Charisma
* A job in TV
* A direct line to God

He became famous as the host of a Telemundo talk show and infamous for breaking his vow of celibacy. But, let's be honest, could we truly expect an attractive, camera-ready, TV star priest like this to not walk the path of human passion? In Miami?

Was it really that shocking that he would be cavorting on a local beach with a sexy woman? Or did it seem natural?

According to him, he had never broken his vows prior to falling in love with the woman who was his “downfall” from the Catholic Church. But he did admit in a recent CBS Morning Show interview that celibacy has been hard.

Father Cutie literally got caught with his hands down the bathing suit of his beloved, and he owned up to it. He just came out and said, yes, I did it, but admitted, "I have struggled with celibacy."

After the photos of his romantic romp on the beach were revealed, the Catholic Church relieved him of his duties. Was he punished and booted out, or did he find a graceful way to slide behind a new pulpiit?

As of now he is switching teams – and has begun the process of becoming and Episcopal. He even did his first sermon and began ministering in a new church. This is a faith that will let him date, marry and, perhaps, frolic on the beach if he chooses.

It seems he has chosen love over chastity, and that he did not have to choose love over God. He insists the woman he was with is someone he cares deeply for. I buy that. But one wonders - why would a priest who is a public figure, a known celebrity, expose himself to getting caught?

Maybe he wanted to be caught? Maybe this was a way to become unchained from his vows of chastity and to free himself of the guilt and confusion of love that equals sin?

Leaving the Catholic Church for another faith and pulpit allows him to serve God and maintain the career he has built -- while enjoying the earthly pleasures of love and partnership. Can we really fault him for wanting that; would God really punish him for having that?

I believe he is a man of faith. But there may come a point when career opportunities will outweigh his worries about scandal and sin. Maybe this will turn out to be the best career move ever, when Hollywood comes a calling with a movie deal and he gets a reality show contract to chart the course of his courtship and wedding planning. (I am making up the wedding, but you know what I mean).

I understand the value of celibacy -- during certain times. Life is messy and celibacy may make us clearer channels for God. But for a lifetime?

Must we really force clergy people into romantic isolation in order to serve God? Is it necessary to separate God from romantic love, and sex -- for a lifetime? After all, priests deserve soul mates too.

Watch Father Cutie's interesting confession about celibacy.

Pet Prayers and Blessings Interfaith Ministry

CATEGORIZED AS: News , Sacred Relationships , Trends

We love our pets. And statistics show that we are willing to spend oodles on our poodles, kitties, horses and other animals, keeping them well groomed, stylishly attired, fed, happy, healthy and safe.

Pet Prayers and Blessing bn.jpg

More than 70 million American’s share their homes with cats, 60 million with dogs, and 2 million or so more with domestic birds. At least 65% of all homes in the United States include at least one pet.

For many of us, pets are as much a part of the family as any human member.

"That is why we are seeing more and more pooches walking down the aisle or bearing rings at weddings," according to Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway and Rev. Victor Fuhrman , interfaith ministers and authors of Pet Prayers and Blessings: Ceremonies & Celebrations to Share With the Animals You Love , due out from Sterling, August 5, 2008.

They have observed in their ministry work, and their own lives, that many owners recognize the divine nature of all “creatures great and small."

Pet owners consider their relationships to their animals sacred and essential. So the Reverends Brockway and Fuhrman, a married couple, treat prayers, healings and celebrations for pets in the same way that they treat human events they officiate of preside over.

Since they cannot be there in person to bless every pet, they have launched the Pet Prayers and Blessings Interfaith Ministry on Beliefnet.com's social networking community. There, soulful pet owners can chat, request prayers and prayer for one another's pets in this spiritual community.

The Pet Prayers and Blessings ministry on Beliefnet.com will be guided with the help of prayer maven and prayer circle expert Judy Newman.

Pet Prayers and Blessings, the forthcoming book, is a unique collection of blessings that specifically addresses the spiritual needs of modern-day pet owners .

Besides offering original prayers and adaptations of classics, it explains how to lead rituals and celebrations, and provides advice on involving pets in spiritual events, including those conducted by the clergy.

Although the book includes and honors many faiths, it is non-denominational and non-religious, and encompasses elements from many cultures and traditions.

There are healing prayers for ailing animals, ceremonies for special occasions (such as the arrival of a new pet), and blessings for a long and happy life with your animal companion.

You can preorder Pet Prayers and Blessings at www.bn.com.

New York Gov. Paterson Reveals Marital Affairs

CATEGORIZED AS: News

From Wedlok.com

Talk about full disclosure.

New York's new governor, David Paterson, and his wife Michelle nipped scandal in the bud when they fessed up to prior affairs. They brought the skeletons out of the closet -- and danced with them for all to see -- on the Governor's second day in office.

Married for 15 years, both admitted to straying. He apparently strayed more.

One can only guess that after Governor Spitzer resigned over a scandal related to call girls and paid sex, that simple marital infidelity does not look so bad.

People always seems shocked when politicians have affairs. I always say, if a man is hungry for the power of office you can bet that he will either be so consumed by it that he will be asexual (remember Ed Koch?) or he will, like so many politicians, be a tad over-sexed and occasionally driven by a hunger to reach for forbidden fruit.

Of course, in this case, it sounded like Governor Patterson just needed a cuddle and some attention.

So far, we like our new governor. He's setting the new trend for people of color and people with disabilities. And wow, he's honest. So heck, he might as well go down in history as the governor who has the most (unpaid) girlfriends, on the side.

God bless the first family of New York.

Vatican "Tweaks" Seven Deadly Sins

CATEGORIZED AS: News

Eve small.bmp

The Catholic Church expanded its list of Seven Deadly Sins to today. Mind-damaging drugs, too much money and genetic experiments are among the new no-nos.

They join original seven sins: lust, gluttony, greed, sloth, wrath, envy, and pride.

Wikipedia shares some insights about the original seven: "Listed in the same order used by both Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th Century AD, and later by Dante Alighieri in his epic poem The Divine Comedy, the seven deadly sins are as follows: Luxuria (extravagance, later lust), Gula (gluttony), Avaritia (greed), Acedia (sloth), Ira (wrath), Invidia (envy), and Superbia (pride)." Now you have the Latin, too.

Just in case you need a refresher, Wikipedia also points out: "Each of the seven deadly sins has an opposite among the corresponding seven holy virtues (sometimes also referred to as the contrary virtues). In parallel order to the sins they oppose, the seven holy virtues are chastity, abstinence, temperance, diligence, patience, kindness, and humility."

As Frances D'emilio of the Associated Press reports: It's not the first time that the Vatican has sought to put a modern spin on sin. Last year, the Vatican took on the problem of highway accidents, issuing a kind of "Ten Commandments" for drivers against the sins of road rage, alcohol abuse and even rudeness behind the wheel.

Some people expressed confusion about how the Catholic Church can "tweak" the bible. I believe that the 7 Deadlies originally were "adapted" from the word of the Bible but that there is not actual list, a la The Ten Commandments. (But correct me if that is not so).

Just for the record, when it comes to "sin", I think Eve got a bum wrap!

Interfaith and Nondenominational Weddings Trends - New Study Offers Insight

CATEGORIZED AS: News , Trends

Yantra.jpg

A recent study on religion in America may provide some insight into the growing trend in interfaith and non-religious weddings.

"The U.S. Religious Landscape Survey" released February 25 by The Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life tells us that more than a quarter of Americans have abandoned or switched from the faith of their birth and 16.1 percent consider themselves unaffiliated.

The study does not specifically cite statistics on Interfaith weddings or marriage, as far as we can see. However, the fluidity of people's religious beliefs is obviously opening the door to increasing numbers of interfaith unions. The evidence that such a large number of Americans have stepped away from organized religion points to the increased demand for non-denominational or non-religious wedding ceremonies.

Anne Frank's "One True Love" Revealed in Photo

A photo has been discovered of the young boy Anne Frank discussed as her "one true love."

Young Anne Frank, who hid in an attic until captured and later died in a concentration camp, was 11 when she fell for a 13 year old named Peter. He too met his end in the camps.

She wrote about the boy with "the beautiful brown eyes" in her world-famous diary: "I forgot that I haven't yet told you the story of my one true love".

The loss of these two young people is such a tragic, heartwrenching tale. Yet how sweet it is that she had thoughts of love to somehow help her through the dark days.

Pastor Challenges Couples To Have Sex Every Day

CATEGORIZED AS: News

From Wedlok.com

I know a lot of husbands who will love THIS idea!

couple on red blanket.jpg

Pastor Bill Wirth, of the Relevant Church in Southwest, Florida, has been all over the news this week with his recent challenge to congregants to have sex every day for 30 Days.

You can bet some couples rushed home to start doing their part for God!

Wirth and his wife were on The Early Show last Wednesday, chatting about how they discovered what is important in marriage. And about what a postive response they have gotten to their campaign to get more married folks into the bedroom -- again and again.

During marital woes they came across the teachings and insighes of Dr. Willard Harley, which focus on learning about each others emotional needs. They studied and applied it. But what does that have to do with sex, exactly?

Obviously, intimacy is a crucial part of staying in love and being close in a marraige and kids, life, let downs and other things -- like weight -- can get in the way. Now's the time to jump those hurdles (and one another).

Said the Pastor, "God is the one who talks about love and authors love, and he knows that he wants us to be intimate and connected with each other on a daily basis."

Amen!

Wirth decided to get people excited about marriage by reminding them of the special spark that got them interested in one another in the first place.

By the same token, it's ixnay on the exnay for singles - i.e., no nookie for them for 30 days. Even engaged couples should hunker down and get to know one another this month, and not in a biblical way.

Wirth has been citing a recent study out that found that 20 million Americans who are married have sex fewer than 10 times a year. A sad but true statistic from sexologist Bob Berkowitz and Susan Yager-Berkowitz's new book, He's Just Not Up For It Anymore.

Wirth spoke of an important point that we can assure you all women want men to know about: It is time for people (men) to understand each other's (women's) intimate needs.

We are all for sex and spirituality mingling in a way that empowers people to a more sacred and healthy kind of love.

Jamie Lynn Spears Is Not A Good Role Model For Teens and Tweens

CATEGORIZED AS: Celebrity Babies , News

I just read that Zoey 101, which stars Jamie Lynn Spears, will be canceled. Excuse me while I applaud!

Why? Because my 16 year old and I were having the "sex talk" recently and within days it was announced that Jamie Lynn Spears was pregnant at 16.

His response: She's pregnant so it must be okay to have sex at that age.

He really, really believed this was a sign of proof that sex is a good idea for teenagers.

I am not a prude but it really has been troubling me that a young girl who is a role model to tweens and teens is now modeling sex, pregnancy, and the idea of making all that work at 16. It is clearly having an impact on other kids her age.

I understand it happens. Nice kids can become pregnant. It may make you a very strong person, ultimately, but for the average kid it limits your choices for many years to come. I just don't want the fact that someone with such celebrity is pregnant and public about it to enforce the idea, "Hey, watch me, you can do it too kids!"

What any average kid cannot possibly understand is that Jamie Lynn clearly has:

Las Vegas City Council upholds decision to revoke Garden of Love business license

CATEGORIZED AS: News

Done. That’s where the Las Vegas City Council left the Garden of Love.

According to an article in the Review Journal, the council upheld an early decision by city staff to not renew the chapel’s business license. The council’s vote was unanimous and the chapel was declared a public nuisance.

The chapel has been under fire for allegations that its employees bully, harass and attack employees from competing chapels. It has also been the subject of some 30 complaints to the city in the last five years.

Local chapels fly Connecticut couple to Las Vegas to testify against Garden of Love wedding chapel

CATEGORIZED AS: News

Garden of Love, Las VegasPeople come to Las Vegas all the time to get married at quickie chapels. Some of them may be boozed out of their minds before hitting the chapel or others may just be feeling a little whimsical.

Not surprisingly, the experience may sour a time or two, but you never expect the chapel to be the culprit. They are, after all, houses of love.

But for the Connecticut couple Rebecca and Doug Wilson, what should have been happily-ever-after marriage nearly turned the couple off from coming back to Vegas ever again. The Las Vegas Sun published two articles about the couple’s woes with the chapel.

The couple wed on July 7 and paid $4,000 for the ceremony, the bulk of which was to go towards a reception that they claim the chapel never gave them.

O.J. Simpson ... Leaving Las Vegas?

CATEGORIZED AS: Gossip , Las Vegas , News

A Las Vegas Judge set OJ free this morning on $125,000 bail.

Whether guilty or not, right or wrong, this case puts him in the headlines again and brings up a lot of memories from his last trial.

Let's hope all the weddings that O.J. does not attend in Las Vegas go a lot smoother than the one he attended last weekend.

O.J. Simpson Ruins Las Vegas Wedding Celebration

CATEGORIZED AS: Gossip , Las Vegas , News

This is not a good Las Vegas wedding story.

O.J. Simpson was arrested Sunday, charged and the story is dominating the news. So sad that he came to Las Vegas to attend a wedding and made a mess of it for the bride, groom and his oldest daughter, Arnell, who was the wedding planner.

He was supposedly in town, he told authorities, for a wedding.

Afterwards, Simpson is alleged to have busted into a Las Vegas hotel room to steal memorabilia related to his career. He was with three other men, who he was said to have met at a wedding reception.

As the Associated Press is reporting from Las Vegas, "O. J. Simpson and three other men were charged Tuesday with 10 felony counts, including kidnapping and assault with a deadly weapon, in the purported theft of at least $80,000 worth of sports memorabilia from a hotel room."

The groom, who was implicated at first, has been cleared of charges. What a honeymoon!

The charges against Simpson are serious. And it comes as no surprise that there are a lot of people rooting for a stiff prison penalty for former NFL star and actor, who is being held without bail at the Clark County Detention Center.

Many believe his karma has caught up to him. And that it is time for comeuppance. What do you think?

A Midsummer Night's Marriage - As Lucky as 7-7-07?

CATEGORIZED AS: Information , News , Wedding News , Weddings

Everyone is talking about 7-7-07. Let's not forget 6-21-07.

It is Summer Solstice, traditionally a heavenly time to pledge your love.

Yin yang.png

And its a lucky day indeed. It is the longest day of the year, a time when the sun is at the height of it’s power, and good vibrations abound.

The folks at Chiff.com put it this way:

"Awed by the great power of the sun, world civilizations for many centuries have celebrated the Summer Solstice - otherwise known as Midsummer. The Celts and Slavs celebrated with dancing and bonfires to help increase the sun's energy, the Chinese marked the day by honoring Li, the Chinese Goddess of Light, and the Druids celebrated it as the wedding of Heaven and Earth, resulting in the enduring modern custom of a "lucky" wedding in June.”

Why is 7-07-07 Such a Hot Date for a Wedding?

CATEGORIZED AS: Celebrity Brides , Chapels , Information , News , Wedding News , Weddings

By Rev. Laurie Sue Brockway

Some people are saying that 7-07-07 will be the most popular wedding date of the century.

Wedding venues across the nation say the 7-07-07 wedding date has booked up fast as couples set their sights on pledging their love on a "lucky day."

You can just imagine what a popular day that will be in Las Vegas, especially since 7-7-7 is a winning jackpot!

Ever wonder why else the number 7 is so hot? We have 7 wonders of the world, 7 seas and 7 continents. Superstitions abound about the numbe. From the religious and spiritual perspectives, here are some of the reasons it is considered sacred.

In the Bible. The number 7 is a perfect and important number.

From the Jewish perspective: The number 7 is prominent in the Torah and the Zohar. God rested on the seventh day of creating earth, and hence, sanctified and deemed Sabbath on day seven. There are seven blessings over the wine are recited under the huppa during the marriage ceremony.

From the Catholic perspective: There are Seven sacraments, we have Seven Deadly Sins (Lust, Gluttony, Avarice, Envy, Wrath, Sloth, and Pride) and Seven Virtues (Chastity, Moderation, Liberality, Charity, Meekness, Zeal, and Humility).

From the Christian perspective: In the New Testament, Jesus tells Peter he must forgive "seventy times seven."

From the Native American and Wiccan traditions: Their are 7 directions: east, west, north, south, Above, Below and Within. There are 7 sacred ceremonies.

From the Hindu tradition. There are 7 energy centers in the body called chakras. They represent both physical and energetic centers and they are: root, solar plexus, heart, throat, third eye, crown. In the Hindu wedding ceremony, the most important part is Saptapadi, the 7 steps around the sacred flame as 7 blessings are chanted.

From the Japanese Shinto religion: There are "Seven Lucky Gods" who preside over fortune.

In mythology: Innana, the Babylonian Goddess Queen of Heaven, had to descend 7 levels to the underworld stripping her jewels, clothes, crown, and ego (7 items in all) along the way in order to rescue her beloved Tamuz from the depths of hell.

Lucky 7

From sports to the stars: 7 comes up sacred again. In astronomy and astrology there are 7 planets that can be seen with the naked eye.In baseball, there was only one number 7 - Mickey Mantle.

Gambler's luck. In the game of craps, 7 wins in any combination. Lady Luck is a character who wears dice for earrings and they always have the number 7.

As you can see, ancient and popular thinking would seem to make 7-07-07 a helluva wedding date, a triple chance at good luck! If this is your wedding day, may it be a lucky roll of the dice!

Polygamists Tie the Knot in Nevada?

CATEGORIZED AS: News

Wedding Goddess Wisdom

Okay, things get wierd in this town and this state ... but one thing you would not expect to see in Las Vegas or anywhere in Nevada is an all-too-young bride in prairie wear getting hitched to her polygamist husband by a "prophet" wanted by the FBI.

A disturbing story from KLAS-TV reported that Warren Jeffs, leader of the Fundamentalist LDS, allegedly presided over marriage ceremonies here between older men and underage girls in the state of Nevada. (Not clear if any happened in Las Vegas, but one would imagine they may possibly blend in on the Las Vegas Strip.)

One young bride, who would have none of that "it's your duty to submit to the marriage and the arrangement came from God" pap from Jeffs, turned him in and sparked the investigation.

It's suspected that Nevada's easy marriage laws might have made for easy legal hook ups. Creepy to think Nevada's support of stress-free weddings and easy marriages would be abused in that way, if it did indeed happen.

Polygamists do not make themselves bigamists by trying to legally marry gaggles of women. Here's how the poligs work their multiple marriage system: Only one wife -- the first wife -- is a legal marriage. The other "wives" are wed in spiritual ceremonies sanctioned by the religious body that governs the polygamist community.

I know this because, interestingly, in my life before becoming a minister, I was a reporter for a magazine that sent on assignment to cover a huge controversy/scandal in the well-know polygamist community that straddles the Arizona and Colorado borders - Hilldale, Utah and Colorado City, Utah.

The News Heard Round the World

CATEGORIZED AS: News

Wedding Goddess Wisdom

I have been having such a hoot reading all the articles from around the world about yesterday's official end to the graveyard shift at the Clark County Marriage Bureau.

You would think that Las Vegas was canceling weddings, all together, forever. The decision to reduce hours and save money has really only reduced the hours of the clerk's office by about 17 hours a week, when you think about it.

It is sad, yes. The end of an era, yes. But not the end of the world.

I think it is time for people to relinquish this idea that people who marry in Las Vegas do so by getting drunk and hitched in the middle of the night. We just hear about all the celebrities who opt for those middle of the night I Dos. It truly is not the "norm" or the most common approach to wedlock here.

Most people plan their weddings. They make phone calls and send e-mails and get prices and book in advance. True, you can walk in to a chapel and make a marriage happen easier than in most cities. But the majority of people do not operate that way. Even it they marry late at night, they have given it some thought.

Can LV Wedding Chapels Help Cure Depression?

Wedding Goddess Wisdom

There is good news for the about-to-be hitched ...

A study conducted by the Ohio State University found that if you happen to be depressed prior to marriage, tying the knot will put the pep back in your step and significantly raise your spirits.

Researchers originally thought that one depressed mate could drag the whole marriage down. They discovered the opposite. Being married makes people feel better.

Researchers Adrianne Frech and Kristi Williams studied 3,000 people to find that down in the dumps singles seem to come alive when wedding bliss comes their way.

No More Twenty Four? Marriage Bureau Hours May Change

CATEGORIZED AS: News

Wedding Goddess Wisdom

Looks like the days of getting drunk and getting hitched in the wee hours of the Las Vegas morn could be a thing of the past ... and maybe it is time to ax that stereotypical image of Las Vegas Weddings, anyway.
